NOTICES

Now that Holy Week is over, and this is the appropriate time to thank the many people whose efforts have contributed to its success. There is the Altar Guild—the ushers and Eucharistic ministers who put in so many extra hours of their time—the people who put on the superb continental breakfast following the Easter Eucharist—and so many others, too numerous to name. Qualifying for special mention are Jeannett Armstrong and Kathy Eisel, who were there making sure everything was right for every Service. And of course, Father Gary’s overall guidance and reverence were what made everything come together.

Special notice needs to be given to the many parishioners who participated in the Palm Sunday and Good Friday presentations of the Gospels. Not only did they give their time and talent to the readings, but to rehearsals as well.
First of all, our narrator, Janet Arnold-Clark. The narrator is the one person who holds the reading together, and Janet gave the whole presentation a coherence that was invaluable. Not only did Janet sustain the readings, but she arranged her schedule to do the readings for the much shorter 8 AM Palm Sunday and 12 Noon Good Friday readings
Perhaps the most demanding characterization is that of Jesus. Larry Duplechan of the Choir agreed to take on this demanding role and did it superbly, with dignity and strength.
The thankless role of Judas was skillfully handled by Jim Shea. Peter was portrayed in both readings by Steve Csik, whose reaction to the cock-crow was inspired. The two servants came over with accusatory strength by Trish Gresham and Nadine Wilcox-Pausic, and Ed Pausic conveyed the authority of both the High Priest and the Elder.
Cliff Goff in both readings conveyed the a mixture of authority and fear of Pilate, placed in the difficult situation of having to pass judgement on Jesus. And Dan Thomas effectively conveyed the military demeanor of the Centurion.
Steve Baker played the smaller but vital role of a Guard and the False Witness in both readings, and served a critical role in the two readings in the Chapel. In both cases, he undertook the role of Jesus, since Larry had to work, and Barbara Schneider filled in magnificently with all the other characters. Janet also arranged her schedule to do the narrator for these readings.
Of the group, Janet was the only person with extensive stage experience (Steve Baker and Larry Duplechan both perform as singers). But the performance level of this group of “amateurs” would do credit to any team of professionals.

The Vestry Meeting returns to its usual fourth-Sunday schedule, meeting in the Library after the 10 AM Eucharist. There will be no Altar Guild meeting in May.

After the extra time spent working on Holy Week and Easter, many choirs try to slow down for a chance to catch their collective breath. While it is true that the St. Luke's Choir as a whole will not be singing on May 1, we will have Larry Duplechan singing that day, joined by Janet Arnold-Clark on flute. The choir entire will soon be back in full force and working harder than ever.
Since the Rector is retiring at the end of the month, we want his last memories of our music to be spectacular. We are bringing back a lot of our Greatest Hits on the last two Sundays of May. Our last Evensong with the Rev. Gary London will be Sunday, May 22 at 4:00, and we are expecting everyone to be there. We will have all kinds of guest singers, including former choir members who are looking forward to being back at St. Luke's. As you might well expect, we want to have the biggest wine and cheese reception ever, and we are going to need a lot of help with food, wine, and setting up and cleaning up. If the Rector has to retire, we're going to send him out with a bang!

Director of Music

Sunday, May 29, will be Fr Gary’s last Eucharist at St Luke’s. After this he will go on accrued vacation and a required sabbatical, and move into compulsory retirement at the end of the year. One of his final acts will be a double baptism for the new babies in the Csik and Laurer families.
We would hope that the entire congregation will want to be present at this last Eucharistic ceremony by our Rector.

Saint Luke’s is an inclusive church that welcomes everyone to be part of its community—_ a safe place for skeptics and doubters as well as convicted believers. The communion meal of God’s presence among us is offered to anyone who comes with a sincere heart to receive it.
