NOTICES
At last month’s Annual Meeting, Father Gary London announced his impending retirement as Rector of Saint Luke’s. He will continue to hold the post of Rector until December 31, but his last day of officiating will be the last Sunday in May, the 29th. This is to complete the Sabbatical he is required to take, and will include the vacation time owed him by the Parish. Following that date, the management of the Parish will be taken over by the Vestry, and the Sunday services will be conducted by supply priests furnished by the Diocese.
Fr Gary spoke eloquently of his reluctance to leave, but explained that it was dictated by Church regulations.
The new children’s program at St. Luke’s, initiated at the beginning of the year under the Children’s Ministry Coordinator Kacie Loren Cleghorn, is turning out to be a great success. As of this writing, there are six children in the program, and the number shows every indication of growing as more parents find it not only allows them the freedom to attend worship services, but offers a worthwhile learning experience for the youngsters.
On March 5, the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, there will be a Mardi Gras celebration in Guild Hall between 5 and 8 PM. You are encouraged to dress in costume. Prizes for the best dessert and the best costume will be awarded. There will also be a wine-tasting event; and for those who don’t care for alcohol, an olive oil sampling. Kelly’s husband Joe Laurer, a well-known chef, will prepare the New-Orleans-style repast.
With Easter being so late this year, we do not start Lenten music until Ash Wednesday on March 9. You will notice a shift in the overall sound of our music. Most of the psalms will be sung in plainsong, something our choir does very well. Our repertory of anthems for Lent is already extensive, and we are continually adding to it. We will be singing many Renaissance motets, but take notice that the Old Testament lesson on April 10 is the Valley of the Dry Bones.
The Fourth Annual Women's Evensong will be sung on Sunday, March 20 at 4:00 p.m. We have listed the event with the American Guild of Organists, and an announcement has appeared in The Episcopal News Update asking for singers from other churches. It is important that we involve the whole parish. Please plan to be with us on the 20th, and please sign up to participate in the wine and cheese reception afterwards.
-- Kent B. Jones
Director of Music
As many of you already know, Christina Zhu, who has handled the office management for several years, is no longer with St Luke’s. She has had an opportunity to be selected for a court translating program that is too good an opportunity to pass up, and a very intense and time-consuming educational program is a prerequisite.
Kacie Cleghorn, who already manages the Children’s Program, has agreed to take on the office responsibilities previously handled by Christina. During the next few weeks, while lines of communication and workflow procedures are being worked out, occasional errors may appear in both the Mustard Seed and the Sunday Bulletins. We ask your indulgence; if you find any errors, please let us know so we can correct them in the future.
Please check your bulletin insert for current prayers.
Deadline for next Mustard Seed: Monday, MARCH 24. Please notify David Bowen at (626) 359-4219 or e-mail the information to him at dbowen1@verizon.com.

Saint Luke’s is an inclusive church that welcomes everyone to be part of its community—- a safe place for skeptics and doubters as well as convicted believers. The communion meal of God’s presence among us is offered to anyone who comes with a sincere heart to receive it.
