NOTICES

A special word of thanks to all the many people who are making Christmas at St Luke’s such a special and holy event. Citing names is always risky, for someone will always be inadvertently left out. But we must mention the Altar Guild, who always outdo themselves in decorating the Church; Kent Jones and his choir for the splendid music; the Eucharistic ministers and ushers; the wonderful children’s story reading by Holly Pearson; and Waynn Pearson as St. Nicholas. Two people who always go far beyond the call of duty: Jeannett Armstrong and Billye Chavis. And so many more, who all participate in so many ways.
And of course — Father Gary, who presides over a reverent and holy Eucharist, and whose guidance brings it all together.

Even though it won’t happen till next month, we should mention that the Annual Meeting, usually held in January, will take place on Sunday, February 6th, and as usual will be preceded by a single combined Eucharist at 10:00 AM.

Despite the vast amounts of music required for Advent and Christmas, the St. Luke's Choir has already started preparing for Epiphany in general and especially Evensong in Epiphany. This year, it will be on Sunday, January 16 at 4:00 PM. Music will include an extraordinary Palestrina anthem commemorating three miracles of Epiphany. We are always hoping to retain some of the new people who join the congregation on Christmas Eve, and we hope that all St. Luke's parishioners will join us on the 16th. A signup sheet will be on the choir bulletin board. We always need contributions of food, wine, and time to make the reception a success.
-- Kent B. Jones, Director of Music
Some comments from Kelly Lauer, choir member and astute observer:
Kent B. Jones, our Director of Music, is good at rolling with the punches and delivering consistently impressive results. Those who attended the Seventh Annual Men's Evensong Invitational last October witnessed his resilience first hand. Sunday morning the organ took a hiatus from its normal operation and insisted on emitting a piercing noise at all times. Kent bravely took up his seat on the rickety piano in the back of the church and treated the congregation to a uniquely beautiful service. The choir performed most of its music a capella to the delight of all.
That afternoon, with the organ still out of commission, Kent gathered his talented Men's Invitational Chorus and delivered a gorgeous, heartrending Evensong service completely a capella. The congregants gathered in the pews were serenaded by the haunting strains of the Phos Hilaron, composed by our Kent B. Jones, performed at the back of the church. After processing in silence, the men, led by cantor Jay Tuttle, performed Kent’s Preces and Responses. Psalm 147 with a setting composed by (you guessed it) Kent B. Jones, Magnificat set by
William Crotch, Nunc Dimittis set by John Blow, and Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria rounded out the service.
Please take a moment to mark your calendars for the upcoming Evensong on January 16. The St. Luke’s Choir and invited guests will be performing Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G Minor by Henry Purcell and Tribus Maraculis by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The organ should be fully functional this time, but Kent and the choir have proven that they can cope with less than optimal conditions and still deliver a stellar performance with its heart rooted in the liturgy of the service.

The New Year marks the beginning of a new children’s program at St. Luke’s. This program fills an important need for both youngsters and their parents. The Children’s Ministry Coordinator is Kacie Loren Cleghorn; let her tell you a little about it. . .
Hello! My name is Kacie Loren Cleghorn. I am happy to introduce myself as your newly appointed Children’s Ministry Coordinator.
I am a 19-year-old sophomore at Azusa Pacific University, where I’m a Psychology major working towards my Bachelors in Child and Family Development and my certification in Marriage and Family Therapy. My goal is to be a therapist for children in difficult situations and families with deaf relatives.
I am very excited to be a part of your church’s family, and I can’t wait to see how our program and your children grow to be full of the love and glory of Christ. Every week, there will be a full lesson for the children to be involved in and learn from. Lessons will include coloring, drawing, verse memorization, and storyboards based on stories from the Bible such as Noah’s Ark and the Ten Commandments. They will be strongly encouraged to take their lessons home and share with their parents what they learned that day.
If you are visiting the church or wish to learn more about the program, please feel free to come and sit in on a lesson and observe, as long as you participate! Feel free to Contact me with any thoughts, advice, or questions.
I hope everyone is as excited as I am to start this new chapter in God’s plan for St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. What better way to kick-start this new adventure than to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ!

And last but far from least....
The end of December marks the departure of Christina Zhu, who for so long has handled the office chores here at St Luke’s—preparing the weekly service bulletins, printing out flower donors, setting up the Mustard Seed for printing, and countless other duties. In addition to her full-time job, Christina is going through a demanding certification program that will qualify her to serve as a Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chines interpreter in the court system, and her workload simply doesn’t give her time to continue her duties at St Luke’s.
Christina, we deeply appreciate everything you’ve done for us, always with superb efficiency, competence and good nature. We all wish you the best and want to extend our thanks. You will be missed.
