Clergy during the Search process:
Clergy during the Search process:
The Rev. Colville Symthe will be with us as our clergy though the remainder of 2011. Beginning in Jan 2012, an interim priest will be appointed to us through the Diocese of Los Angeles. Our interim priest will be with us until we have completed the Rector Search process.
One thing that will remain constant through this transition is our family here at St. Luke’s. As with any family in a time of change, it will bring us closer together. There will be smiles, tears, and of course many questions as we move forward in our journey together.
The important thing is that we work together, keep the lines of communication open, and take care of one another.

Search Process Update:
The Vestry has contacted our liaison at the Diocese, The Rev. Joanna Satorius, to move forward with our search process for our new Rector. For those of you unfamiliar with the Search process in the Episcopal Church, the very brief outline in last month’s Mustard Seed is repeated here:
The first step in the process is developing a "Parish Profile". The Parish Profile acts as a prospectus of St. Luke's to the Diocese and for potential candidates. It explains St. Luke's history, direction and what we are looking for in our next Rector. All of the profile's content will come directly from the congregation through a questionnaire.
Once we have compiled all the data and have a completed Profile, the Search Committee will move into action. The Search Committee is a group of parishioners tasked with the responsibility of reviewing applications provided to us from the Diocese. They will then narrow down this list of applicants to a workable list for further consideration through personal interviews with the applicants. The next step will be to have the remaining applicants present a sermon to the search committee, either at St. Luke's or their own parish. Eventually, the Search Committee will provide the Vestry with their recommendations for 3 candidates. Based on our parish profile and the committee's reviews and recommendations, the Vestry will discuss which candidate is the best fit and believe is "called" to be the next Rector and the offer will be made. Provided the prospective Rector agrees and is able to accept our offer, we will then have our new Rector.
Though there are some possible variations to this overall process, the MOST important element of this process is and always will be the Parish Profile. This is where the congregation is able to contribute individually and participate in the selection of our next Rector. We will be hoping for 100% participation.
September Profile Process Update
Both Junior and Senior Wardens met with the Rev. Canon Joanna Satorius, (Canon for Formation and Deployment from the Diocese of Los Angeles) to discuss both the Parish Profile and Search process. During their meeting, the Rev. Satorius outlined the steps involved in developing a Parish Profile and how that flows into the search process.
Kelly Lauer, Junior Warden is chairing the Profile committee. We will be conducting Focus Groups and other events to gather information from parishioners. The information obtained from the Focus Groups will be used to develop a parish survey.
Once the parish survey is developed, everyone will be asked to complete the survey. For those parishioners who are not present or may be unable to attend, we will have alternate ways to help them complete the survey. Completing the survey is your voice in the Parish Profile/Search processes so it is important that everyone take part. The survey is being completed and its distribution is presently scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd.
August Profile Process Update
Our Parish Survey has been created and distribution began on Sunday, Oct 2nd. Copies of the Survey were passed out to those in attendance. The Parish Survey can also be requested to be mailed to you directly and we hope to have it available on our website as well. Our goal is to have them completed and returned to the church office by October 30th so the profile committee can begin reviewing the data to create the parish profile.
Instructions for completing the Survey:
Each parish member aged 16 and older is asked to complete the attached questionnaire and return it to the church office no later than Sunday, October 30, 2011.
Your answers will be carefully evaluated and will be handled in complete confidence.
The analyzed results of this survey will be published along with information and factual data about our community and parish in a document called The Parish Profile. The Parish Profile is an important step in the process of identifying and calling our next Rector. Its use is threefold: (1) It will aid the Search Committee and the Vestry, who will ultimately decide who our rector will be, (2) It will help the diocesan staff match our parish with likely candidates, and (3) It will give candidates insight and information about our community, our parish, and its people.
When you turn in your questionnaire, this cover with your name will be separated from the attached pages. The attached pages will later be assigned a number. This cover will verify that you have taken part in this survey, but your answers will, in effect, be anonymous.
Please answer every question prayerfully and thoughtfully and with the sincere interest of our parish at heart. Please read the questions carefully. Make written comments whenever you like. If there is not enough room in the spaces provided, use the backs of the sheets or attach additional sheets.
Thank you in advance for your participation.

Stewardship
We began our annual Stewardship drive on October 2nd and it will continue through the month of October. The official ingathering of pledge cards will be on Oct 30th however you may turn them in any time during the month of October as well.
People often ask, what is stewardship? At its most basic, it is how we care for the gifts we have received from God. It is the wise and faithful use of our resources – our time, talents, and treasure – all of which we believe were given us by God. Stewardship is about community and how we function together. It is a personal thanksgiving to God for all of the gifts that God has given us. While emphasizing once more the importance of the use of our time and talents during this fall stewardship effort, our primary focus will be on the commitment to financially support God’s work at St. Luke’s through pledging.
Your pledge to St. Luke’s allows the Vestry to make plans and allocate funds for the support and strengthening of the ministries, missions, and outreach efforts of the church. It aids in the preparation of a master plan or budget for the coming year. The budget will weigh heavily on the Vestry’s decisions both in calling our next Rector and in maintaining our existing programs.
St. Luke’s Day – Eighth Annual Men’s Evensong Invitational – October 23rd
If it’s October at St. Luke’s, then it must mean that we’re getting ready for our first Evensong of the season – the Eighth Annual Men’s Evensong Invitational for St. Luke’s Day. Every year, we strive to involve as many parishes as possible. Many of the singers come from smaller churches like St. Luke’s, where there are few chances to sing four-part men’s music.
And you would be disappointed if we did not follow Evensong with a wine and cheese reception in Guild Hall. The sign-up sheet will soon be available on the choir bulletin board or at coffee hour. Not only are we striving to involve as many parishes as possible, but we are striving to involve as many members of our own parish as possible. We need everyone’s help in setting up, cleaning up, and bringing food and wine. The second person (after me) to start getting ready for the big event was Lyn Walsh, who has been working over the proverbial hot stove, getting an early start on her famous jams, chutneys, and marmalades, which are the main source of the choir’s fundraising.
Many of you regularly check out the choir’s bulletin board in the Parish House, conveniently located next to the church office. There is currently a display on the subject of Vivaldi’s Gloria, one of the best-known and best-loved of the major choral works. While we will not perform the entire work, we will be bringing you individual solos and choruses over the period of a few months.
