                                                          TRANSITIONS

In the very near future, we will be embarking on a new chapter at St. Luke’s Monrovia.

After 17 years of nurturing and caring for us, our shepherd Father Gary London has begun his sabbatical and will retire at year’s end.

Supply priests have already been scheduled throughout the remainder of the year, so there will be new faces.  Roles and responsibilities in the Vestry will be changing.  Committees will be set up to handle the many tasks and overall work involved in selecting our next rector.  If you would like to be actively involved in any portion of the search process, please let some one in the Vestry know.

The present list of supply priests:    July - Entire month        Jeffrey Stephens

                                                                       8/7 & 8/14        Pat O'Reilley

                                                                       8/21 & 8/28      John Crean

                                                          9/4 - 12/25        Colville Smythe

Search Process Update:

The Vestry has contacted our liaison at the Diocese, The Rev. Joanna Satorius, to move forward with our search process for our new Rector. Rev. Satorius responded she will be out of the office until early July, and we will be setting up an appointment to meet with her as soon as possible upon her return.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Search process in the Episcopal Church, here is a very brief outline:

The first step in the process is developing a "Parish Profile". The Parish Profile acts as a prospectus of St. Luke's to the Diocese and for potential candidates. It explains St. Luke's history, direction and what we are looking for in our next Rector. All of the profile's content will come directly from the congregation through a questionnaire.

Once we have compiled all the data and have a completed Profile, the Search Committee will move into action. The Search Committee is a group of parishioners tasked with the responsibility of reviewing applications provided to us from the Diocese. They will then narrow down this list of applicants to a workable list for further consideration through personal interviews with the applicants. The next step will be to have the remaining applicants present a sermon to the search committee, either at St. Luke's or their own parish. Eventually, the Search Committee will provide the Vestry with their recommendations for 3 candidates. Based on our parish profile and the committee's reviews and recommendations, the Vestry will discuss which candidate is the best fit and believe is "called" to be the next Rector and the offer will be made. Provided the prospective Rector agrees and is able to accept our offer, we will then have our new Rector.

Though there are some possible variations to this overall process, the MOST important element of this process is and always will be the Parish Profile. This is where the congregation is able to contribute individually and participate in the selection of our next Rector. We will be hoping for 100% participation.

 The current plan is to invite Rev. Satorious to join us after one of our 10:00 am services to give us a brief presentation on the Search Process. Immediately following her presentation, we will distribute the Parish Profile. Any parishioner not in attendance will be contacted to complete the profile questionnaire. The goal of the Vestry is that everyone's voice be heard (via the questionnaire). Understandably, the Search process is neither a short process nor one that should be rushed. More details of the Parish Profile and Search will be included in future Mustard Seeds and mailings.

Clergy during the Search process:

As noted in the May Mustard Seed, supply priests are scheduled through the remainder of the year. Beginning in Jan 2012, we will have an interim priest appointed through the Diocese.

As noted in the May Mustard Seed, supply priests are scheduled through the remainder of the year and a list is included above.  Beginning in Jan 2012, we will have an interim priest appointed through the Diocese. The Rector Search process will be going on as we are using supply priests and even through our interim priest. Once the entire search process has been completed, a Rector will be "called" and St. Luke's will have their Rector. The supply and interim priest are not specifically candidates; they are serving and worshiping with us while we go through our search process.

One thing that will remain constant is our family here at St. Luke’s.  As with any family in a time of change, it will bring us closer together.  There will be smiles, tears, and of course many questions as we move forward in our journey together.

The important thing is that we work together, keep the lines of communication open, and take care of one another.

Vestry 101

So what is a Vestry?  Not having been raised in the Episcopal Church, I did not find out what a Vestry actually is until I joined it here at St. Luke’s.  For those of our congregation who, like me, became Episcopalians later in life, I offer this first in a series of indeterminate length about the history and function of the Vestry.  I hope you enjoy it!

The term derives from the vestry or sacristy, the room in a church in which vestments and liturgical objects are stored.  The Vestry is, quite simply, the leadership and governing body of the church, a group of volunteers elected by the church membership to represent the congregation in decision making.  The Vestry’s leadership primarily concerns its fiduciary responsibility for the church.  The Episcopal Canon (the law that governs the Episcopal Church) establishes the Vestry to “administer all the temporal business of the Parish.”

So what does that mean?  Essentially, the Vestry is responsible for the day-to-day operations of St. Luke’s.  It (through the Senior Warden) pays the bills, keeps track of all funds received and all necessary expenses, prepares and approves a budget, and takes care of the buildings and grounds.  In addition, the Vestry engages in outreach and pastoral care to the extent possible.  If you ever want to know what the Vestry is up to, just check out the Vestry’s bulletin board in the parish hall.  Minutes from Vestry meetings and up-to-date financial reports are always posted there.

Next month, I’ll discuss the role of the Wardens.

Cheers,

Kelly Lauer

            A prayer to begin our search

            ST. DENYS' CHURCH

            STANFORD IN THE VALE

Shepherd of souls, give us for the leadership of your church in this parish, a man or woman after your own heart:

A person of prayer, filled with the Spirit;

A person of vision, wisdom and sound judgment;

A person with a pastoral heart and a true love for people;

A person with a longing to see your kingdom come in the world.

Prepare the person of your choice for their ministry among us,

and prepare us for their coming; and overrule by your Spirit in everything for the doing of your will and the furtherance of Your glory;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Amen

Couches in Guild Hall

            Several parishioners have mentioned that there seems to be an overabundance of couches in Guild Hall. We appreciate each and every one of them, considering that they were generously donated to the church. Unfortunately, some of them have outlived their useful life and has made it difficult to maneuver in our small hall. We will be going through the couches over the next 30 days and deciding which ones stay and those that need to be donated or disposed.

New School in Fall 2011

After almost 30 years, Carden of the Foothills will be ceasing operations.  Changes in the economy over the past few years have resulted in a significant decrease in enrollment.  Coupling this with the increase in expenses and operating costs, Carden of the Foothills is no longer able to continue operations.  Carden and its staff has been packing up and saying goodbye.  But there is light for them as well, as they will be joining with another school in the area so they can share resources and expenses, allowing their students to continue the Carden of the Foothills legacy.

            Beginning in Fall 2011, Tzu Chi pre-school will be expanding and using our facility for 1st and 2nd grades.  Tzu Chi is very excited about their expansion and coming to enjoy our campus. They have been operating their pre-school on Palm Avenue for many years and saw this as the perfect opportunity and location for 1st and 2nd grades.  So you will see changes on the school grounds as the modular building is removed and the grounds beautified

            July marks the start of my eighth year at St. Luke's and the eighth year in which I have had the pleasure of working with The Rev. Jeff Stephens during this month.  We have a roster of guest clergy for the rest of 2011, and they won't all be doing things exactly the same way.  So far, the congregation has shown great flexibility in keeping up with different styles.  (Did you know that some congregations sing even more than we do?  Hard to believe.)  During the summer, hymns will be familiar and most of the choir will be in the congregation.

            We will enjoy having the occasional soloist or small group during the summer until the choir returns after Labor Day.
